F5 E2 Error on a Whirlpool Washer: the Door Won't Lock

On the documented Whirlpool front-load platform, F5 E2 indicates that the door is not locking properly. First check the latch and any trapped clothing.

A closed door does not mean the lock has been recognized

The notice described in the manufacturer documentation appears when the required lock is not completed to start or keep the cycle running. Note whether it happens before water enters or during the wash; that detail helps describe the issue.

  1. Stop the program selection. Open only when the door releases normally.
  2. Remove any garment that crosses the gasket or latch. If the laundry is pressing against the door, reduce the load.
  3. Close it normally and check that there is no visible object in the engagement area.
  4. Use the cancel and retry steps indicated for your model's control panel.

If the door won't open or there is water inside, do not pull on the handle to complete this check. Follow the door and safety lock walkthrough before trying to retrieve clothes.

If it appears again

A visually correct closure with persistent F5 E2 requires checking the locking system. It does not by itself confirm which part has failed. Top-load HE lid warnings have their own process in the Whirlpool index; do not apply the front-door instructions to them.

Do not insert objects or electrical bridges into the latch to make the washer start.
