LdL and LdU Alerts on Whirlpool Washers: Lid Lock

LdL means the lid is not able to lock; LdU means it cannot unlock on compatible Whirlpool HE top-loaders. The position of the obstruction matters.

What to check with each message

AlertExternal check
LdLClothing under the lid and detergent buildup visible around the latch.
LdUBaskets or objects resting on the lid that make it hard to release.
lidLid that has been left open; the cycle state determines how to proceed.

These differences are noted in the manufacturer documentation for HE top-loaders. They do not automatically diagnose a lid switch issue.

Restore normal locking

With the machine stopped, remove any weight from on top of it. If the lid opens normally, move away any trapped clothing and clean only surface residue as directed by the manual. Do not reach into moving parts or insert tools into the mechanism.

If lid has caused a cancel and drain, check the program status before restarting: the laundry may still have detergent in it and may not need a full additional dose. If LdU continues, wait for the release time specified by the model and request help; forcing the lid can damage the lock and will not solve the cause.

Report the exact message: LdL and LdU call for opposite checks of the same lock.
