F9 E1 indicates a drain cycle that is too long on front-load Whirlpool machines; drn indicates improper draining on top-load HE models. Both require checking the drainage system, without mixing up codes between control panels.
Follow the drain path
The manufacturer documentation links F9 E1 to drain time. The allowed height and filter access belong to the model manual: not all Whirlpool machines have a front filter that the user can open.
- If water remains, visually check for kinks in the hose and whether the household drain is backing up.
- After installation, check the height, support, and outlet connection against the appliance diagram.
- If there is a lot of suds, note the detergent and amount used; suds can also make drainage take longer.
Before removing a filter
Stop the cycle, disconnect the appliance safely, and let the water cool. Use the user drain method in the manual, with a container and the ability to stop the outflow. Do not fully unscrew a cap with the drum full. Once empty, clean only what is accessible and close it again securely; see filter preparation and cleaning.
If the hose and accessible filter are clear but water is still trapped, avoid running more cycles and request service. Hearing the pump does not prove that it is draining properly or confirm that it needs replacement.
Tell the technician whether the message appears every time it drains or only with certain loads and products.
