Curtains and sheers should be able to withstand washing as a whole, including coatings and trims. Remove detachable accessories and check the volume before choosing a gentle cycle.
The visible fabric does not tell the whole story
A simple curtain may need different care from a blackout panel with a lining. Check the care label and any damage to the backing. Shower curtains also require checking the material and the restrictions of waterproof items on the machine.
Remove hooks, rings, weights, or other parts only when they are designed to come off. Do not cut weight pockets or seams to make a curtain suitable for washing.
Preparing, washing, and removing
- Sort by fabric and color, and pretreat stains using the allowed method.
- Protect delicate parts according to the instructions, avoiding tightly packed bundles.
- Respect the load limit of the cycle, which depends on volume and treatment.
- Measure detergent and use the approved temperature and spin speed.
- Remove the item without leaving the fabric bunched up, and finish drying it.
Rehanging and wrinkles
Hanging a damp curtain so it can stretch out is only appropriate if its label and structure allow it. The weight of the water can stress tapes and seams; do not use this practice as a general rule.
If pronounced creases appear, check the load and the spin. A detached lining or distortion is not necessarily fixed by repeating a gentle cycle.
Rehang the curtains according to the drying instructions; do not use their wet weight as an automatic way to remove wrinkles.
