How to Wash Down Jackets and Padded Garments

The jacket must be suitable for full washing and have a compatible drying method that reaches the filling. Natural down and synthetic fill may require different products and care.

Inspect the garment

Read the care label and check the baffles, seams, zipper, and any damaged areas. A small opening can release fill during movement. Check whether the hood, trim, or other parts can be removed, and do so only if the design allows it.

The outer fabric also matters: a jacket with a membrane must comply with its restrictions and those of the washing machine. Approval for the filling does not let you ignore them.

Prepare the wash

  1. Treat dirt on the collar or cuffs only with the permitted method.
  2. Use a product suitable for the filling and measure the dose; disable any incompatible automatic detergent setting.
  3. Place the item with enough space and proper distribution according to the allowed cycle.
  4. Complete the wash, rinse, and spin within its limits.
  5. Remove it with support so you do not put all the wet weight on one seam.

Finish drying the inside

Follow the method on the label until the filling is completely dry. Do not force a dryer, dryer balls, or a temperature taken from another jacket. A dry surface can hide moisture between baffles.

Filling that clumps while still wet does not by itself mean irreversible damage. Check the distribution and loft when the authorized drying is complete. If a problem persists, consult the manufacturer before subjecting it to more cycles or friction.

For a duvet, the volume and whether the entire item is suitable require a different assessment.
