OL alert on a Whirlpool washer: load too large

OL indicates a load that is too large on compatible HE Whirlpool top-load washers. The fix is to remove clothing and check how the previous cycle ended.

Reduce the load without doubling detergent

The manufacturer documentation explains that the machine may drain water and detergent when it detects an overload. Stop the cycle and wait for the lid to unlock. Remove several items until the load fits the program capacity, without packing the remaining clothes down to make room.

Before continuing, check whether that drain cycle really finished. Follow the model’s procedure for the new dose: adding detergent automatically when the laundry already contains it can create another suds problem.

Dry weight and occupied volume

The capacity in kilograms refers to dry laundry under the program conditions. A comforter can take up too much space even if it does not weigh much; it may also not be allowed in the selected cycle. Check the program chart instead of relying only on the advertised maximum capacity.

If the problem is a load that is unevenly distributed, the code is Ofb. With OL, redistribute the laundry after reducing it; redistributing an excessive load does not make it no longer excessive. See how to calculate and balance the load.

If OL appears with normal amounts and appropriate programs, request service without repeatedly trying test loads.

Note which items you removed and which program was selected if you need to explain a repeated warning.
