Maytag LdL and LdU alerts on washers: lid lock

On Maytag top-load HE models, LdL means the lid will not lock and LdU means the lid will not unlock. First check for items under the lid or weight resting on top, depending on the alert.

LdL when trying to start

With the machine stopped and the lid normally open, check whether a garment is sticking out of the drum. Look for visible debris near the latch and remove it only as the manual instructs. The manufacturer documentation does not make this alert proof of a faulty switch.

LdU when finishing or pausing

Remove baskets and objects resting on the lid. Wait for the drum to stop and for the release expected for the model. Do not lean on it while trying to open it, and do not bypass the safety lock with tools.

The lid message is another status: the lid has been left open. If the machine has already canceled and drained, see how to reset it without doubling detergent on clothing that may still have detergent in it.

When to get help

If the message persists with no obstructions, save a photo of the control panel and note whether it fails to lock or unlock. When laundry remains inaccessible, the procedure for emergency lid opening and lockout requires checking for water and movement before any permitted access. Do not force the mechanism to finish a wash.

Keeping the last letter of the alert avoids applying the LdL check to LdU.
