Maytag Washer Ofb Alert: Fixing an Unbalanced Load

Ofb indicates unevenly distributed laundry in a top-load Maytag HE washer. The next step depends on whether it is still rebalancing or has already stopped.

Watch before opening

The manufacturer documentation says the washer may try to correct the load on its own. If it keeps moving as expected and there are no hard impacts, wait. If the control blinks and it stops, use the indicated pause and open it when the lock allows.

Undo clumps and place loose laundry around the wash plate. A single bulky item that soaks up a lot of water can concentrate the weight on one side. Do not try to compensate by adding water to the tub; also do not add more items if that would put you over the cycle load.

A blanket needs a cycle that can handle it

Check the manual chart for bulky items, including whether the item is absorbent or traps air. Fitting when dry does not mean it can be washed in any cycle. If the total amount is excessive, the code is OL; Ofb focuses on balance.

If it happens again with different, properly prepared loads, check for stable support and recent location changes. See knocks and movement when vibration is the main symptom and request service if it continues.

Note the items that make up the clump; that detail is often more useful than listing only the load weight.
