How to Wash Underwear, Bras, and Small Delicate Garments

Underwear does not all require the same care: elastics, underwires, cups, and embellishments may need different treatment than a simple garment. The hygiene needed must be compatible with that construction.

Separate by structure

Read the label on each item. A bra may be machine-wash excluded even if other intimate garments allow regular washing. Check hooks, loose underwires, and open seams; do not wash an item that could release rigid parts.

Prepare closures to prevent snagging and use the protective bag specified, without packing in several tightly squeezed pieces. A bag does not override a no-machine-wash instruction.

Select the allowed cycle

  1. Make up a load with compatible limits for color, fabric, and soil level.
  2. Use an approved detergent, measured for the actual amount.
  3. Select the appropriate cycle, temperature, and spin; do not impose a temperature setting just because it is underwear.
  4. Remove and reposition cups or straps without stretching, and dry according to the label.

When there is an additional need

Reusable menstrual underwear requires attention to absorbent layers and barriers. If there is illness or contamination, follow the specific hygiene guidance, without adding disinfectant as a routine or increasing heat beyond what is allowed.

For skin discomfort, check the formula and rinsing by following sensitive skin care. Fragrance does not indicate tolerance or hygienic effectiveness.

Before storing underwear, check closures and shape as well as dryness; a damaged item needs attention before it is washed again.
