Clean the detergent, fabric softener, and housing drawer

The manual drawer is cleaned along with its authorized inserts and the accessible housing. Removal varies by model: not all drawers come out as a complete unit, and not all parts are dishwasher-safe.

Identify the drawer and the removable parts

Find the release latch and compartments in the manual. The fabric softener insert or siphon may have its own position; make a reference note of the assembly before removing it. If there are automatic tanks connected to circuits, use their specific procedure.

Whirlpool warns in its cleaning guide that complete removal and dishwasher compatibility are not the same for every dispenser. Not forcing past resistance by pulling harder is part of the preparation.

Detach the reservoirs without deforming the plastic

  1. With the machine stopped and unplugged for manual work, remove the drawer following its release mechanism.
  2. Separate only the inserts described as removable. Do not disconnect ducts or connections behind the housing.
  3. Rinse the parts with the permitted water and method. If there is dried detergent or gelled fabric softener, loosen and remove it gradually according to the manual; use a soft brush when allowed.
  4. Clean the visible recess with a slightly damp cloth. Do not insert tools into water outlets or wet internal areas.
  5. Rinse, dry, and reinstall the inserts in their position. Reinsert the drawer without forcing the guides.

Check the assembly and product flow

Check that the siphon is not raised, twisted, or out of place. Do not change its position in an attempt to empty a compartment. A small amount of water afterward may depend on the design; compare the behavior with the manual.

If the problem continues with the parts clean and properly assembled, distinguish product left in the dispenser from water coming out through the drawer. Cleaning does not confirm a pressure or valve failure. For widespread dark residue in the housing, see contamination in damp areas.

Keep the original inserts and do not swap parts between similar compartments. Their seating affects dispensing and draining.
