The drain pump keeps running

A pump that keeps running with the tub apparently empty may be responding to a protection feature or inconsistent level information. It does not automatically mean the pump or the control board is faulty.

Brief draining versus persistent operation

Some cycles drain water at the start or end. Check whether that behavior is expected. The problem changes when pumping goes on, repeats, and prevents any operation, especially if it is accompanied by an alert.

An empty-looking drum does not prove there is no water elsewhere. The system may detect residual water, an incorrect level, or a leak in a lower area.

What to observe before stopping use

  • The exact message and when the pumping starts.
  • Visible water on the floor or recent signs of moisture.
  • Whether the issue began after moving the appliance, cleaning a filter, or an overflow occurred.
  • Whether the cycle starts filling with water or immediately drains again.

If water appears outside the appliance, follow the leak detection guide and disconnect power from a dry location. Do not tilt the washer to empty a tray or manipulate the float to clear the alarm: the protection does not fix its cause.

What the inspection should distinguish

Depending on the design, you will need to check the level sensor, the leak protection system, the drain circuit, or the pump control. The fact that the pump motor keeps turning does not prove that water is flowing correctly.

Do not keep the appliance running just to see how long it takes to stop if a persistent behavior unrelated to the cycle has already been identified.
