How to Measure a Washing Machine and the Space It Will Be Installed In

Measure the space the closed washer needs and the space it takes up when in use. The opening must allow for connections, doors, and servicing access, as well as passage along the delivery route.

Take the measurements using the manufacturer’s drawing

  1. Note the width, height, and depth, and identify what each dimension includes: cabinet, door, controls, and protrusions.
  2. Mark the swing of the open door or lid and the space needed to reach the drum without obstructions.
  3. Allow for the clearances indicated for hoses, cord, ventilation, and separation from furniture.
  4. Check the dispenser opening and access to the filter or any available service point.
  5. Measure the doors, hallways, elevator, and turns the appliance must go through to get in or out.

A listed depth may refer only to the cabinet. Pushing the machine all the way back until it fits can kink a hose or leave no room for a connection to move.

What to check at the actual location

The opening may vary in width from the front to the back, or have baseboards and pipes that reduce the usable space. Measure several points and use the most restrictive one along with installation tolerances. Do not assume a door is reversible.

To convert dimensions, 1 inch equals exactly 2.54 cm. Keep enough precision when converting and do not round in a way that removes needed clearance.

Installations that add conditions

A built-in cabinet adds panels and hinges; stacking adds height and service requirements for the unit. Also plan the move: the final space alone does not guarantee access.

Compare the actual measurements of the route and the opening with the full installation plan, not just a width figure.
