Dry and air out the washing machine after use

Remove the laundry when the cycle ends, wipe away any accessible moisture, and use the ventilation method intended for your washing machine. A slightly open door can help it dry, but you need to control access for children and pets.

A routine for when you remove the last load

  1. Wait for the cycle to finish and for the door or lid to unlock normally. Remove all the laundry, including small items stuck to the drum.
  2. Check the load edge and, if present, the accessible fold of the gasket. Wipe up lint and drops with a soft cloth without inserting it into openings.
  3. Dry the glass or lid where condensation has formed. Only handle the dispenser drawer in the opening method allowed by the manufacturer.
  4. Let the inside air out according to the manual and the space available. Do not place objects to force hinges or latches.

The door position depends on the environment

An opening that blocks a hallway can cause bumps. It also should not leave the drum accessible to children or animals. If you cannot keep access controlled, dry what you can reach and check the model’s ventilation options; the control lock does not necessarily mean entry into an open machine is prevented.

On equipment with GE UltraFresh Vent compatibility, interior drying uses a specific function with the door closed. Do not imitate that behavior on a washing machine that does not have it, and do not disconnect an active function that requires power.

What water deserves a closer look

A few drops in a fold or some moisture in the dispenser are not the same as a drum full of water. If you see a water level that remains, an area that fills up without washing, or moisture that ends up on the floor, do not try to solve it just by leaving the door open. Note where it appears and when.

If the folds already have buildup, move on to gasket cleaning. When the bad smell persists, drying is a step that comes after finding and removing the cause.

Airing out reduces available moisture; by itself, it does not remove stuck-on residue or disinfect the system.
