To clean a top-load washer, first check whether it has a vertical tub with an agitator or impeller, or a horizontal drum with doors. The top opening does not determine which parts are removed or what cycle it supports.
If it has an agitator or impeller plate
With the machine empty and unplugged for manual work, collect debris from the lid, loading rim, and visible surfaces. Clean the agitator body or the plate without loosening fasteners. A dispenser lid may be removable while the lower assembly stays fixed.
The guide to agitators and impellers helps distinguish a user-removable part from a technical disassembly. If the model has a lint filter, clean it separately and reinstall it before using the machine.
If it has a horizontal drum with doors
Wait for the lock to release and for the opening position indicated by the unit. Inspect the doors and edges you can reach with a soft cloth. Do not force hinges, springs, or latches, and do not spin the drum with the doors not properly closed. If they do not close as the manual indicates, stop using the machine.
Look up the dispenser and filter procedure for that design. Do not assume a guide for a vertical tub describes its access points.
Finish with the approved interior cleaning
- Check that no objects remain and that dispensers, filters, and doors are installed.
- Select the maintenance cycle for the model and use only the intended product.
- When it finishes, wait for the lock to release and inspect the wash area: remove any accessible residue and run the post-rinse if indicated.
- Dry the rim and allow the lid to ventilate safely.
Do not add water manually to raise the temperature or level of an automatic unit. If it does not have a heater, cleaning must be adapted to its programs and supply, not to a temperature borrowed from another machine.
Top access makes it easier to see certain areas, but it does not make the agitator, impeller, or pump routine removable parts.
