Steam provides heat and moisture in the phase it is designed for. By itself, it does not equal a full wash, maintaining a water temperature, or sterilizing any garment.
How steam can reach the clothes
Depending on the design, the appliance may use a dedicated generator or heat a small amount of water in a designated area to produce steam. The path and timing of release depend on the model; the name of the option does not let you infer where the heater is.
The heating of the wash water controls the bath. Steam may come into play during the wash or in a different phase. A refresh cycle with moisture and motion also does not mean residues have been removed by the rinses in a full program.
What should accompany a performance claim
To interpret a function intended to reduce wrinkles, check the load size, allowed fabrics, preparation, and removal at the end. For a claim about allergens or microorganisms, the exact program, load, test, and documented limits are needed; it is not enough for steam to be present.
The effect depends on how the garments contact moisture and heat, on movement, and on duration. A compacted load may receive different conditions than those in the test. A cycle certification should not be extrapolated to every setting on the panel.
What decision is up to the user
Confirm compatibility on the care label and in the manual. Everyday settings are covered under steam programs and functions; here the distinction is physical and functional. The system does not authorize using less detergent than required for a wash or treating materials that require a specialized process.
Treat steam as a phase with documented conditions, not as an independent guarantee apart from the program and load.
