How to Reduce Microfiber Shedding When Washing Clothes

To reduce fibers released, avoid unnecessary treatments and check the effectiveness and compatibility of any capture device. There is no reduction percentage that applies to all fabrics and machines.

What is being measured

A textile microfiber can come from synthetic materials or from other fibers; microfiber and microplastic are not synonyms in every case. The amount that ends up in the water depends on the fabric, wear, and test conditions.

A University of Plymouth study compared several fabrics and conditions and found different results. Its figures belong to that test; they do not let you calculate the emissions from any ordinary household load.

Usage decisions that can be evaluated

Wash the garment when it needs cleaning and use the program that removes its dirt within the care label instructions, without adding intensive cycles or repeats out of habit. Avoiding an unnecessary wash reduces one operation, but it does not justify keeping clothes that are wet, contaminated, or dirty.

Check for damage, sorting, and unnecessary friction. Do not assume that the gentlest cycle always releases fewer fibers: duration, water, and movement all change at once and need to be compared.

Choosing and maintaining a compatible capture device

In a Plymouth test published in 2020, six devices produced different results under comparable loads and measurements. That variation makes it impossible to attribute the figure from the most effective device to any bag or filter.

Before using a bag or device, look for tests that describe the fabric, load, machine, and measurement method. Distinguish the percentage of fibers captured from the total reduction in emissions, and do not compare it with another figure obtained under different conditions.

Follow the device’s loading and cleaning instructions and remove the residue by the indicated method, disposing of it according to local regulations. Do not return the collected fibers to the drain during cleaning. A standard protective mesh does not have proven capture effectiveness based on its appearance.

Installing external filters and meeting environmental obligations require specific verification; do not add accessories to the system without the team’s authorization.
