How to Wash Wool in the Washing Machine Without Felting It

Machine-wash wool only when the care label allows it and the machine offers a suitable cycle. Preparation and wet handling matter just as much as temperature for preserving shape.

Confirm the go-ahead

Merino, pure wool, or a blend describe composition, not permission to wash. Check the care label on the entire garment, including appliques and lining. Woolmark links machine washing to the garment care statement and recommends a suitable mild detergent and flat drying for the items covered by its guidance.

Wash without improvising a gentle cycle

  1. Check the seams and fasten closures; place the garment according to its care label.
  2. Select the cycle approved for washable wool and its load limit, which may be lower than the machine's general setting.
  3. Use detergent explicitly compatible with wool and measure the dose. Check additives and auto-dosing so you do not introduce another product.
  4. Keep temperature and spin within the applicable instructions; do not add soak or extra spin out of habit.

Support the garment when removing it

Lift the damp fabric with support, avoiding picking up its full weight by the shoulders, cuffs, or one sleeve. Reshape it as directed without pulling to make up for presumed shrinkage, and complete the allowed drying process.

A delicate cycle does not automatically mean the wool cycle. If there is no clear match, review the differences between gentle cycles before washing. A garment that is already felted or shrunk requires assessing the type of damage and its recovery limits rather than repeating a more intensive wash.

Keep the shape intact during removal and drying; do not try to correct a change that could be felting by pulling at it.
