Top-loading washer fills but does not agitate

If an automatic top-load washer fills but does not wash through agitation, confirm that the sensing or soak phase has finished and that it recognizes the lid. After that, it helps to know whether it still spins.

Check the program’s actual phase

Low noise and water can hide brief movements. Watch the panel status from outside and use only the pause and opening allowed by the manual. Do not hold the lid open or trick its sensor.

GE offers its own diagnostic for top-load washers that fill and do not agitate; a reset sequence for one specific family should not be applied to every machine.

What information separates the causes

  • If the cycle stays waiting for closure, check lid recognition before the motor.
  • If you hear the drive engaging but the agitator or clothes do not move as before, the problem may involve fastening, splines, or the transmission.
  • If spin is also missing, the fault may affect shared components or a condition that prevents both operations.
  • If it started after a load with hard objects, stop using it if you notice rubbing or binding.

Inspection of the agitator or impeller and the transmission requires identifying the exact design. Do not use pry bars to lift the basket, and do not infer the shaft’s condition from a single feeling of play.

A semi-automatic washer with separate controls follows a different path: see two-tub pulsator that does not spin.

Report whether the clothes change position between authorized pauses and which operations it does complete; there is no need to observe the exposed mechanism.
