What garments and items should not be put in the washing machine

Exclude the item if its label or the machine manual prohibits it, or if you cannot confirm a condition that affects safety. A delicate cycle does not correct incompatibility in size, material, or contamination.

Inspect the entire item

  • Structure: rigid pieces, reinforcements, and accessories that cannot be separated by design.
  • Padding: materials that may break down, retain water, or leak through damaged seams.
  • Electrical components: assemblies that do not have an explicit washing and drying procedure.
  • Volume: items that do not meet the individual size limit or do not have enough room to move.

A washable cover does not authorize putting its core inside. A mat with a washing label may still be excluded from the washer because of rigidity or a waterproof backing. Check its conditions in small rugs.

Water retention and waterproof materials

Some machines prohibit washing or spinning waterproof items because of water distribution and vibration. Others include specific settings. The decision must follow both instructions, as explained in the check for membrane garments. Do not try to compensate with a bag or a randomly chosen speed.

Contamination that changes the treatment

Do not put clothing soaked with fuels, solvents, or unknown substances into the washer to see whether the odor comes out. Identify the product and follow its approved procedure, or consult the responsible expert. Contaminated work clothes require a decision before home washing.

If there is no label and no recoverable instructions, fiber appearance is not enough. Consult the manufacturer or the appropriate care service before testing.

If a safety condition remains unconfirmed, use the indicated alternative care instead of trying a program.
